Setup

3–12 players. Everyone secretly receives the same word — except one randomly chosen faker. In classic mode the faker knows they're the faker (and gets only a vague hint). In in-the-dark mode the faker gets a similar decoy word and doesn't know they're the odd one out.

Clue rounds

Every player gives one word that shows they know the secret word — without saying the word itself. Playing online, everyone types their clue at the same time against one shared timer, and the round's clues stay hidden until they're all in — so nobody can copy. Playing in person, go around the table saying them out loud. Every clue in the game must be different — repeats and trivial variants (test/tests/testing) are rejected. Do 2–3 rounds.

Study, discuss & vote

Online, the clues are revealed together after each round with a short pause to study them. Who was vague? Who was suspiciously specific? After the final round, the complete clue history stays available for analysis and everyone votes for who they think the faker is. You can change your vote until the last person locks in — and online a 30-second voting clock keeps things moving: when it runs out, the votes that are in decide it (no votes at all counts as a tie, and the faker survives). A caught faker gets 30 seconds to make their guess.

The reveal

Scoring

The faker's reward is bigger because each round has many crew but only one faker — over several rounds the totals stay fair. Scores accumulate across rounds in the same room, and whoever has the highest total when you stop playing wins the night. Winning several rounds in a row earns a 🔥 win-streak badge and affects the score, rather than being cosmetic. Players who join mid-game start scoring from the first round they actually play.

Frequently asked questions

How many players do you need for the imposter word game?

Between 3 and 12 players works best. With 4–8 players the discussion and bluffing are at their most fun.

What does the imposter (faker) see?

In classic mode the faker is told they are the faker and gets only a vague hint. In "in the dark" mode they receive a different decoy word and are not told anything — everyone must deduce who holds the odd word.

What happens if the faker is caught?

They get one final chance to guess the secret word. A correct guess steals the win; a wrong guess (or conceding) hands the round to the crew.

Can you play on one phone?

Yes — pass-and-play mode shows each player their word privately on one shared device, then clues and voting happen out loud. It works fully offline.

Is Find the Faker free?

Yes — free to play in any browser, no account and no install. You can also add it to your home screen like an app.

Can you play with fewer than 3 people?

Online, yes — the host can add bot players in the lobby. Bots give clues, vote, and can even be dealt the faker role, so two friends (or one curious player) can try a full game.
